San Jose is an expansive city encompassed by rolling slopes in Silicon Valley, a noteworthy center of Technology in California's Bay Area. Early landmarks following the 1883 Italianate-style Oddfellows style and Spanish Colonial Revival structures, make up the downtown historic area. Once a calm horticultural valley of plantations and residential areas moored by the ill-defined processing and shipping points in San Jose, the region of San Jose transformed into a financial and innovation powerhouse 40 years ago. Now, it is a major crossroads between America and Asia.
The downtown district is home to the Tech Museum of Innovation, committed to the investigation of science and technology. The San Jose area was once occupied by the Olhone Indians, due to the inexhaustible supply of water from the Guadalupe River. In 1777, the first Spanish pilgrims named it Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe to pay tribute to Saint Joseph. Theirs was the first settled in what is currently California. One of the main universities in the region is San Jose State University, which opened in 1871. Other schools in the region are Stanford University and the University of Santa Clara.
