The city grew out of a vibrant lumber and grain milling industry into a thoroughly modern town that has still maintained the warmth and charm of the American Midwest. Minneapolis lies on the banks of the Mississippi River which offers it rich waterworks along with the city's 13 lakes, wetlands, and creeks.

The city incorporates a vast array of neighborhoods within its confines divided up into 11 communities, from the high-rise offices and apartment blocks of Central Minneapolis from Downtown to the North Loop; to the stately homes of West Calhoun and Lowry Hill in the Calhoun-Isles; to University which encompasses almost all of the University of Minnesota; to the rustic Minnehaha Falls of Hiawatha in Longfellow. From urban city blocks to sprawling suburban homes, to stunning nature trails, Minneapolis is as diverse as it is beautiful.

Those visiting the city might be the most attracted by the downtown cultural. Situated atop Lowry Hill, the Walker Art Center offers one of the country's largest modern art collections, while the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Frank Gehry-designed Weisman Art Museum further round out the art scene. The Guthrie, Orpheum, State and Pantages Theaters, and Hennepin Center for the Arts regularly bring live productions to the city. Minneapolis' music scene is also bustling, bolstered in part by serving as the birthplace of Prince (not to mention visits from Minnesota's other famous son - Bob Dylan - who was born in nearby Duluth).

Shoppers and foodies alike are also both well accounted for in the city. Minneapolis is the home to Mall of America, the largest shopping mall in the United States, as well as Uptown which offers local and independent boutiques and restaurants. Minneapolis has also enjoyed accolades for its award-winning restaurants and cuisines, the city has notably made the nation's top local food lists for many years.
